Jewelry Storage for the Practical Girl

I've spent quite a bit of time researching jewelry storage that was both practical and easy on the eyes. While it's nice to go on Etsy and find an adorable necklace stand with a turtle on it, I needed something that was going to keep my jewelry organized and tarnish free. Let's be real, I'm not hoarding large amounts of real gold and diamonds over here, so storage that keeps my bling clean and wearable for more than a few occasions is pretty high on my priority list and slightly difficult to find. I think we all know that it's a real buzz kill when you find a necklace you want to wear and it's tarnished from rubbing against all of your other lovely pieces.

Luckily I was able to marry a few ideas that I recently discovered, and came up with this little beauty. I don't have any in-progress photos, because I wasn't planning on posting this, but creating it is pretty simple.

 You will need:
1 square of peg board, however large you have room for (find this at Lowes or Home Depot)
Peg board hooks, loops etc.
Craft paint, the color of your choice (note: do not use spray paint, it does not stick to the surface)

It's really as simple as painting your pegboard a lovely color ( I chose white, so my colored jewelry would pop), nailing it into the wall, popping in the hooks that work best for your jewelry collection, and organizing it in a manner that makes you excited to wear it. It's a pretty awesome use for something that typically isn't used for the prettiest of objects. I've loved the organization, minimal tangles, and knowing exactly where my favorite pieces are at all times.

I have a feeling I will want to expand soon though, there's only so much space on this guy. I'm already planning a trip to purchase more hooks for rings and statement necklaces. If you've got a boat load of jewels, I say go nuts and make a jewelry wall. This will probably go over best if you live alone…

Have fun!

The Simplest Treat You'll Ever Meet

I've been working kind of a lot lately. This generally means less traipsing around on dates in dresses and a lot more sweatpants and Netflix. I'm just being honest here.

What I can typically count on to liven me up even in my most tired state is spending wee bit of time in the kitchen making something delicious and listening to some sick jams. Recently, I've been experimenting with some delicious watermelon mocktails, this bomb kale salad I found, and last but certainly not least some simple rice krispie treats. The recipe really couldn't be easier. I tend to switch it up every time I make them and generally just eyeball the ingredients, but here's a rough estimate below. The extra kick? A little sea salt on top. I generally find that a little sea salt on most desserts goes a long way. Just me?

5 cups Rice Krispies
1 jar of marshmallow creme (7-8 oz) or 10oz of marshmallows
1/4 cup butter
A sprinkle of sea salt

Melt butter and marshmallow creme in a large sauce pan. Stir in Rice Krispies 2 cups at a time until fully coated. Transfer to a pre-greased 13x9 inch glass pan. Coat a spatula head in butter and press treats down firmly to create an even layer. Sprinkle with sea salt and let cool.

Try experimenting with some adorable sprinkles, a drizzle of caramel, or oreos (these are pretty incredible).

The trick is not to eat all of them at once. Oops, I just ate one for breakfast. Sorry Mom!

A-line Love

Oops, it's my favorite summer skirt again. It's pretty fitting that I would post it twice in a matter of a couple months since I wear it pretty much every week. I still think it's the absolute greatest, although I clearly need to steam that sucker. If you have a skin tone that looks great in a bright yellow, I would highly recommend snagging this skirt in light citron it at your earliest convenience.

I'm sorry to report, this top is no longer available. I love to play the game of shopping -looking at EVERYTHING- and coming home with nothing. I'll think about everything I saw and if something sticks with me until the next time I'm there, I buy it. I know this probably hints at my commitment issues, but I've scored some pretty awesome pieces by letting fate decide if the items are still available by the time I'm ready to commit. I debated on this pretty little crop all summer long and finally purchased it, only to realize it would become a summertime staple.

I also have to say that while this outfit would have pulled together quite nicely with a pair of heels/wedges, it was definitely a day for flats since we ended up walking approximately 4000 miles (including a very mild hike). These shoes were pretty awesome though. They're simple, cute, and more comfortable than some sandals that I've spent a pretty penny on. And they're less than $20! I highly recommend them if you need a pair for travel that may not look so pretty when you get home.

Sunshine State of Mind

Nordstrom Rack Romper (sold out of orange) / Target Shoes / Baublebar Necklace (similar) / Stella&Dot bangle / Madewell bracelet / Nordstrom Sunnies / Essie Nails

Guess what I did this weekend? I took a jaunt down to Santa Monica, that's what.
Guess what else? I loved it.

I seriously had so much fun spending time with my handsome man in the LA area this weekend. We meandered around the beach, did all the touristy things, and went to Disneyland, duh!

I found this awesome romper at Nordstrom Rack for less than $25 dollars! The lady who rang me up started talking to me about how she couldn't wear a romper because they didn't work on her long torso. I told her she simply wasn't trying hard enough because once she found the right one, it would change her world. This frilly-boho combo is so comfortable and easy.  It's the perfect lightweight item to pack on vacation and wear over and over again.

While I know my romper is a fiesta on it's own, I had to add another tiny pop of color to my wrist with the Julep bangle from Stella & Dot paired with my standard Madewell classic. The Julep bangle is on mega sale right now, so you should probably get one in every color.

I'm already missing the sand and sun. Is it time for me to go back to the beach now?

Black and White and Red All Over

Guys. I had a pretty amazing week. I got to overcome my hermit crabness and spend quite a bit of time with not one, but two close friends that I don't see often enough. Don't you just love kicking back with people who not only make you laugh like nobody's business, but inspire you to be awesome and get exactly what you want out of life? Well, that's how I spent my week and girl, it feels good.

I bought this skirt about a week ago only to bring it home and realize that I had not one, not two, but three other skirts in the exact same color. Am I the only one who does this? As much as I try not to have a uniform, the heart wants what it wants. This swingy little thang is light and simple and ready for a picnic in the park. And yes, I'm wearing these shoes again. They work with everything, okay?

After a long week at work and a busy weekend filled with weddings and errands, I was ready to treat myself this morning. Sometimes you just need to take a long bath, slather yourself up in your favorite refreshing products, and sit in your nest to recuperate for a day.

1.) Miss Jessie's Original Pillow Soft Curls: Au Natural for me means embracing my natural curl. No heat styling for me today, I've got to be nice to this mane every once in a while. Miss Jessie's PSC is perfect for allowing me to wash and go resulting in voluminous, healthy, frizz-free curls. Any curly girl knows this combo is hard to come by.

2.) Harvey Prince Hello Body Cream: I once read that cleaning supplies are often lemon scented because the smell of lemon perks people up and makes them happy and clean. After using this lotion, I'm sold on that claim. This lemony cocktail of essential oils leaves me smooth and smiley (surely that's a word).

3.) GlamGlow THIRSTYMUD Hydrating Treatment: This mask provides mega hydration for my forever thirsty skin. I generally wear it longer than suggested, either overnight or throughout the day. It doesn't have a green or white tint to it, so you don't look too crazy waltzing around with the mask on your face all day.

4.) Vaseline Lip Therapy - Rosy Lips: Combine vaseline, a sweet scent, and a rosy tint and I may never need another lip balm again.

5.) Yogi Tea: I always wind down with a little Yogi tea. Whether it be healthy skin (my current fave), comforting chamomile, or detox, they've always got the perfect potion for a relaxing day.

6.) Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvinator: I start many of my mornings with this scrub and a splash of cold water. It's not only one of the most refreshing ways to wake up, but this exfoliator can make your skin glow!

Now, back to House of Cards...

Something Old, Something New

Clutch (old) Similar / Target Dress / Target Shoes (old) similar / Nordstrom Necklace (similar) / Disneyland hat (similar)

I'm a notorious clothing pack rat. Most other things in my life, I'm happy to clean house with, but clothes I will keep forever. Every time I realize I need to clean out my closet (usually at the suggestion of my husband), I find items I purchased years ago and never wore. This obviously becomes a challenge to wear it immediately to prove it's still relevant as crazy as it looks. These shoes are just that.

I paired the wedges with a pretty simple look since they're kind of a spotlight stealer. This dress though. It's fabulous, It's the perfect basic to dress up or down or accessorize to death, if that's your thing. Also, it's now on sale! I would suggest purchasing it in all colors.

Oh and one last thing: if you're wondering about my Disneyland hat, yes I really purchased that at the Indiana Jones shop in Disneyland. My best friend and I went on a trip in 2010 and my poor Scottish head could not take the direct sunlight all day. I marched right into the nearest shop and purchased a pretty perfect fedora that I've worn for years since, thus proving that you can buy a useful souvenir in Disneyland. You just never know.

Plain and Simple

J Crew Tee / Gap Denim / Keds Dottie Sneaks / Madewell Leather tote / F21 Floral Necklace

I've been all about the Keds for as long as I can remember. I sported them with my stirrup leggings as a tiny tot and then proceeded to wear them through high school, college, and my current state of early adulthood. It's come to a point where there are two things that I can pretty much guarantee Santa will bring each year, Keds and OPI nail polish. Lucky for me, the designers at Keds have come out with about a bajillion adorable new styles over the last couple of years and I can't get enough of them (thanks T-Swift)! Whether you snag a pair of Kate Spade editions or go for the classics, it's pretty easy to find an adorable pair for anyone!

Side note: I was snooping around on the Keds site and found these stellar, low-cut, incognito socks that come in an array of colors fit for a unicorn. You can wear them with all your tennis shoes that you pretend to be barefoot in, but secretly aren't. And they're cotton, cotton! With a heel gripper! I was sold. Just thought I'd pass that along.

The New Yoga Pant

H&M Skirt  / Bar III tee (old) / F21 Necklace / Target Sandals / Madewell Bracelets / Essie Fiji Nails

Cotton on jersey on cotton. What could be more comfy for a lazy Sunday? For me, a simple jersey maxi skirt is my go-to when I really want to wear yoga pants out and about, but I know I need to be an adult and wear real clothes. With a statement necklace and a fiesta of bracelets on your wrist, you can easily convince someone that you put a lot of thought and time into looking snazzy for your lunch date.

The coolest part about this maxi skirt is that you can buy it at H&M for less than twenty bucks. It's a staple. It looks pretty lackluster on the hanger, but oh girl, there's so much you can do with the skirt, if you put your mind to it. It also comes in about 46 other colors (exaggeration), so go for the patterned look if your feeling really wild.

Red, White, and Blue

Target Denim / Brandy Melville head scarf, similar here

It doesn't have to be Independence day to wear red, white, and blue, which is a good thing since I wear some variation of this outfit every time I'm in a rush to get out the door. It took me a while to get on board with the chambray idea, but ever since I purchased this little popover, I'm a changed woman. It's so easy and looks good with just about anything: tucked into a skirt, layered over floral shorts, whatever your heart desires. I know I'm late to the game on this one, but if you're on the fence too, make it happen. You'll be happy as a clam that you did.
